Skipper Heather Knight has called for England to improve their batting after taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against Pakistan.
England scored 37 runs in the derby, while Pakistan failed to overhaul the home side’s total of 243 runs by just 9 runs.
Knight was one of eight England batsmen to reach double figures with 29 as Nat Sciver-Brunt (31), Tammy Beaumont (33) and Amy Jones (37) also made useful contributions.
However, no one went past 50, with only teenager Alice Capsey breaking 40 to score 44, her highest personal ODI score.
“We’ve had a lot of starts and we’ll probably want one of our top five or six hitters to go and score big,” Knight said.
“I thought Tammy did a really great job of setting the tempo, and she just fit the way we were going about things.
“Capsey’s small innings was good, but a bit sloppy and there were a lot of areas we could have strengthened.
“We want the batting to continue. Many of us have started but we want one batsman to really dominate and take that score to around 300.
“But forcing the game on that wicket was quite tricky. “It was a little slow.”
Taunton will host the second match of the 50-over series on Sunday, with the final taking place at Chelmsford next Wednesday.
Sophie Ecclestone’s three-wicket haul took her to 98 ODI wickets.
The 25-year-old spinner will become the fastest woman to take 100 ODI wickets if she takes two more scalps at Taunton, surpassing Australia’s Cathryn Fitzpatrick.
Knight, who switched from T20 cricket after the 3-0 series win over Pakistan, said:
“You are there to demonstrate your skills for a longer period of time. Please be a little more patient.
“You have to read the ebb and flow of the game more and adapt to that.”
Pakistan looked well-positioned for victory at 149 for 4 in 35 overs.
But the five wickets left them with 29 runs in seven overs and dashed Pakistan’s hopes of a maiden ODI win over England in the 13th attempt.
