Vice President Harris’ campaign has slammed former President Trump’s social media posts about Florida’s marijuana legalization ballot measure as “blatant flattery.”
President Trump announced in a post to Truth Social Sunday night that he will vote yes on Proposition 3, which would legalize marijuana in the Sunshine State.
“As I have said before, I believe it is time to end the unnecessary arrests and detentions of adults for the personal use of small amounts of marijuana,” the former president wrote. “We must also provide adults with access to safe, proven products while enforcing sensible regulations.”
Harris’ campaign spokesman, Joseph Costello, said in a statement Monday that Trump’s stance on the move is “out of keeping with his record.”
“Donald Trump’s blatant flattery cannot overshadow his extensive record of rolling back marijuana reform,” Costello said.
“President Trump has cracked down on nonviolent marijuana crimes, undermined state legalization laws, opposed safe banking legislation, and even attempted to eliminate protections for medical marijuana,” he added.
“Donald Trump doesn’t really believe in marijuana reform, but the American people are smart enough to see through his campaign lies.”
President Trump said in a post Sunday that he would continue to push for marijuana reform when he returns to the White House.
“As President, we will continue to focus on research to deregister marijuana for medical use as a Schedule 3 drug, pass common-sense laws including safe banking for state-licensed businesses, and work with Congress to support states’ rights to pass marijuana laws that are highly effective for their citizens, like Florida,” he wrote.
Earlier this year, the Biden administration announced it was beginning a formal rulemaking process to redesignate marijuana from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3.
“This is monumental. Today, my administration has taken the important step of reclassifying marijuana from a Schedule 1 drug to a Schedule 3 drug, a critical step toward reversing a longstanding inequity,” President Biden said in a statement on the social platform X at the time.
But Biden has failed to deliver on his 2020 campaign promise to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level.
President Trump has previously indicated that he might support measures to legalize recreational marijuana.
“Florida, like many other states that have already done so, will legalize adult personal use marijuana under Amendment 3,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social late last month. “Whether people like it or not, it has to be done right because it will be approved by the voters.”
Congress has reached out to the Trump campaign.
