Sometimes, when you leave your Macbook Air 13.6.4 and come back after a few minutes, the screen remains black and you cannot use the computer again. At this point the keyboard backlight comes on and Caps Lock works, but the screen is unresponsive.
I tried a few combinations, closing the screen and reopening it, but it didn’t fix the problem. Rebooting is the only solution, but this results in loss of open tasks in browsers (poorly designed sites like reddit, gov sites, etc. and some software like VLC). When I rebooted my MacBook, the screen never went blank.
Since it has only happened about 10 to 20 times, it is not yet known whether it is related to power status or other situational factors. No peripheral devices have been connected. This doesn’t happen near my familiar monitor, so I’m not sure if an external monitor can save open work. I’ll try remote login later, but I’m not sure if the software is running.
I’ve read that some M2 screens have hardware issues. Should I replace the screen? Are there any signs of this bug in dmesh or other logs? Or should I simply wait until it breaks and take the machine to an Apple Store?
If this isn’t just the screen hardware restarting after sleep and the entire computer stays in sleep, is there a mechanism to force the screen to restart without restarting the computer? Ideally it’s a key combination or software that provides key combinations, but something that can be done via a peripheral or SSH may also be feasible.
