Greenlandic Prime Minister Moute Egede on Thursday hit back at Donald Trump’s talk of buying Danish territory with a “clear” message from Greenlanders who are not very happy with the U.S. president-elect’s proposal.
In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Egede emphasized that Greenland will be a strong partner for the United States, which he described as part of NATO and a “close neighbor” who has cooperated with the territory for the past 80 years.
“I think there will be many proposals in the future on which we can collaborate, but we also want to be clear. We do not want to be Americans, we do not want to be part of the United States, but we want strong cooperation with the United States,” Egede said.
Trump, who enjoyed purchasing and annexing Greenland during his first term, turned his attention to controlling the territory again last month.
A few weeks later, Donald Trump Jr., who likes the “rare minerals” found in Greenland, visited the Arctic island, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared the area “not for sale.” declared.
Greenlandic officials, such as Greenlandic lawmaker Pipaluk Lynge, also gave the hat to the US president-elect’s son during the trip, with residents reportedly donning the ‘Make America Great Again’ hat before taking ‘staged’ photos. I lost.
Fox News correspondent Alex Hogan recently reported that residents of Greenland’s capital Nuuk also had “a lot of mixed reactions” to Donald Trump’s interest in annexation.
Asked whether residents would vote for “independence from Denmark,” Egede noted that it was “up to the people of Greenland” to decide.
“If Greenland takes that step, I think it’s important to know that we will always be part of the Western alliance and a strong partner for the United States. Because your security is our security,” he said.
He later added that the future of Greenland and its territories “will be decided by the Greenlanders.”

“And Greenlanders don’t want to be Danes, and Greenlanders don’t want to be Americans. “The Greenlanders, as Greenlanders, want to be part of the Western alliance,” he said.
