New York Magazine’s cover, featuring Vice President Kamala Harris under the headline “Welcome to Kamalot,” became the butt of several jokes on social media Monday.
“Welcome to Kamalot! The new issue covers the two weeks that reshaped the 2024 election and the thrill of taking a risk by putting Kamala Harris on the Democratic ticket,” the post reads, which is also linked to in the report.
The post continued, “On the heels of President Joe Biden’s historic departure from his re-election campaign, our new issue features Kamala Harris’s electrifying, infectious, and potentially dangerous presidential campaign.”
Liberal media, Democrats defend Vice President Harris as she continues to solidify her nomination
Social media users tore up both the image and the message.
“This play on words refers to a hypothetical monarch who was not voted for by anyone under his rule,” said Stephen Miller of The Spectator.
“It’s a fun pun, but it’s a bit cheesy for a magazine to refer to a media-driven myth about a former Democratic president,” wrote Joe Gabriel Simonson of the Washington Free Beacon.
Even outlets like Not the Bee mocked the publication by mentioning the word “Monty Python” on their covers.
New York Times Editorial Board Urges Kamala Harris to ‘Do Better’ Than Biden When Answering Reporters’ Questions
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis shared the image and accused the media of trying to “manufacture” Harris into the candidate she is not.
Townhall.com writer Sarah Lee called it “gorgeous and dystopian.” Several others called it “strange” and “disturbing.”
But some Harris supporters found inspiration in this photo.
“Kamalot” – we love it!” the Democratic Union wrote. “In just one week, Kamala Harris has energized the Democratic Party like nothing anyone has ever seen before.”
“Since we sent our last issue to the printers, Donald Trump has survived an assassination attempt, J.D. Vance has joined his candidacy, the Republican Party has boasted of an imminent victory all week in Milwaukee, Joe Biden has contracted the coronavirus, his closest Democratic allies have pushed him out of the race, and Kamala Harris has closed out the race to succeed him at an astonishing pace,” editor David Haskell said of the new issue.
“We created an issue that covers all of this, looks into the biggest financial and political scandals of Trump’s second term, sends a lookbook to Sandy Hook nude beach, and much more (including a very long, relatively low-stakes, timeless literary beach read),” he added.
President Biden endorsed Harris for the presidency after she announced on Sunday that she was withdrawing from the race due to her poor performance in the debate and concerns about her health and fitness. Since then, several media outlets have appeared to support the vice president and defend her from past controversies, including claims that she was once Biden’s “border czar.”
Harris has been widely dubbed the “border czar” since Biden tasked her with addressing the root causes of mass migration from Central and South America in March 2021. The Biden administration has rejected the title, but the term has been used widely by her critics and various media outlets, and so far she appears poised to displace Biden as the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination.
Why now? The media is largely silent about the sudden crackdown on Kamala Harris’ ‘border czar’ label
Former President Trump’s running mate, Ohio Republican Senator J.D. Vance, is one of several Republicans who argue that Harris’s selection as the next nominee is undemocratic because it did not involve a voter input.
“It’s a threat to democracy, not a threat to the Republican Party, which fights for democracy every day,” Vance said at a campaign rally in Ohio.
The Trump campaign said Monday that Trump would debate Harris if she wins the Democratic nomination. The Democratic National Convention runs from Aug. 19 to Aug. 22.
