Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) criticized Republicans for not supporting Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.)’s attempt to regain control of the gavel in the House.
“This is an incredibly stupid suicide strategy. … These people need psychologists,” Gingrich said during an appearance on Fox News Friday afternoon.
His comments came after days of criticism from Republican lawmakers over President-elect Trump’s departure from supporting Johnson’s re-election.
“I don’t understand what CONTRARIAN House Republicans think they have to gain by opposing Speaker Mike Johnson,” Gingrich wrote in a post on social media platform X on Tuesday.
“They don’t have anyone who can get more votes. “They risk disrupting President Trump’s election victory on January 6,” he added, declaring Republican lawmakers “allies of the Democratic Party.”
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) fired back in a lengthy post explaining why Johnson is not the best candidate for the position.
In the first vote Friday, Johnson failed after losing the support of three key Republicans, including Massey.
Lawmakers plan to hold a second vote after the deadlock Friday afternoon.
