Broadcaster Geraldo Rivera said Monday that he supports Vice President Harris over former President Trump in the election, which is less than a month away.
Rivera, who was once a close associate of the former president, posted a long post on the social platform “That’s why I’m voting for Kamala Harris. “Our 47th president.”
The Fox News alum said he hasn’t spoken to Trump since Nov. 13, 2020, just days after he lost the election to President Biden.
“He called to get my side of the story about the controversy surrounding an election that appears to have been decided by minority votes in several states,” Rivera added. “I asked him what he would do if the vote numbers continued to be against him. “When I reported it on Fox News that same morning, Friday the 13th, he said he was a reasonable person and would do the right thing when the time came.”
He said President Trump chose to do the opposite, launching an “increasingly threatening campaign to discredit the 2020 election.”
Rivera eventually distanced himself from the situation when he did not support his decision. His comments echo similar comments the former TV host made in an interview with The New York Times last year in which he said the former president had “chilled” him after feeling tense following the 2020 election.
Rivera, now a correspondent for NewsNation, which is owned by The Hill’s parent company, Nexstar Media Group, said in his post Monday that while others may still support Republican candidates, he cannot.
“Maybe you’re willing to vote for the former president anyway because he says he’s going to cut taxes or build a border wall or leave NATO or put tariffs on China,” Rivera said. “But you justify voting for Trump, and accepting his big lie about a stolen election makes you a liar.”
Rivera said he would not support Trump again in 2022.
CNN’s Chris Wallace, who previously worked at Fox News, recently appeared on a podcast where he tracked down his former network for its coverage of Trump, the 2020 election and the resulting lawsuits.
“I have had no problem with conservative opinions as much as I have with liberal opinions,” Wallace said. “But what I have a problem with are conspiracies and lies. The truth is non-negotiable.”
The Hill reached out to the Trump campaign.
