Ellis Bevan is set to take up the challenge from two-time World Cup winner Faf de Klerk to become Wales’ starting captain in Australia.
Bevan is expected to be included in Wales coach Warren Garland’s starting full-back squad for the first Test match against the Wallabies in Sydney.
Additionally, with Wales preparing for a two-match series against the Queensland Reds, Garland will have access to experienced No. 9s Gareth Davies and Kieran Hardy.
Bevan heads to Australia after making his Test debut against world champions South Africa at Twickenham, where the 24-year-old Cardiff player comes up against Springboks half-back De Klerk.
“It was something I was really looking forward to and wanted to do on my debut against a two-time World Cup winner,” Bevan said.
“If you want to get to where he is, you have to compete with the best players.
“He told me I had a good game and told me to keep going. He was kind enough to give me his shirt and we took a photo in the changing room. He’s a great guy on and off the pitch.”
British-born Bevan, whose father hails from Swansea, never doubted where his international aspirations would lead.
“It was always Wales,” he added.
“It’s never been a question to me. I know I’m being true to myself when I say that.”
Bevan’s father, stepmother, girlfriend, aunt, uncle and friends from Solihull and Bryanston were all among those who supported him in the match against South Africa.
Bevan also praised former Cardiff full-backs and Wales international team-mates Tomos Williams and Lloyd Williams for being influential on him during his playing days.
“I went (to Cardiff) as a 20-year-old at university and had things to learn from Thomas and Lloyd Williams and you couldn’t have found better people to learn from,” he said.
“There are three of us in the Australian squad and the other two are good scrum-halves.
“If I can have a career half as good as Gareth and Kieran have had, I’ll be fine.”
Gatland’s resources have been significantly stretched for the Australia series, with several England players who missed the South Africa games due to the end of the World Rugby summer test period now available.
The squad includes forwards Daffyd Jenkins and Chris Chuninja, flanker Tommy Riffel and centre Nick Tomkins, with Gatland aiming for a first win over the Wallabies in Australia since 1969.
Wales have suffered 11 consecutive defeats on Australian soil, including 63-6 (1991), 42-3 (1996) and 31-0 (2007).
Meanwhile, Galtland’s team have not won a Test match since beating Georgia in the 2023 World Cup group stage, losing seven in a row.
