The best of Australian video game development has been celebrated at the 2024 Australian Game Developer Awards (AGDA). A roster of game developers and industry heroes received flowers at another dazzling annual show.
This was an opportunity to celebrate and elevate the most creative and innovative ideas coming out of the Australian game development scene, while also showcasing how hard and persevering local developers are. Making games is difficult in the current economic climate. But through it all, Australian developers are working hard to create memorable and fantastic new gaming experiences.
In terms of individual awards, it was great to see a number of Rising Star Awards being handed out. Chloe Appleby, Program Curator and Strategic Project Manager at the Powerhouse Museum, received one of these awards for her contribution to developing the local video game industry through exhibitions and events.
Awesome Black’s Ben Armstrong received another Rising Star Award for his support and advocacy for First Nations representation in video games and his wider contribution to the industry.
The Adam Lancman Award went to Ross Symons, founder of Big Ant Studios. Symons was renowned for helping to lay the foundations of the Australian video game industry in its early days, continuing to champion its growth and providing a pathway for junior developers.
The Studio of the Year award went to everyone. chaos theory games this year. The studio also received an Excellence in Impact Award for its work on: crab lumps.
conscript Game of the Year Award at AGDAs 2024
A variety of games including Geshin, Cloak, Cozy Caravan, Wild Bastards, And many more received awards of excellence in various categories. conscript They ruled the roost. It won the Game of the Year award at AGDA 2024, as well as the Excellence in Art and Excellence in Emerging categories.
Game developer Jordan Mochi largely worked alone on the title, which makes this award even more impressive.
Mochi said of this achievement, “Originally I had no idea what I wanted the game to be, but I knew I wanted to make a survival horror game.” “From there, I set out on the ambitious task of teaching myself as many game design disciplines as I could, from coding to art, sound design, marketing, and more.”
