The portable Windows experience could soon change for the better.
microsoft is currently planning to overhaul and improve the Windows portable gaming experience, with changes expected this year. At CES 2025, Microsoft’s Vice President of “Next Generation” Jason Ronald discussed improving support for portable PCs running Windows, especially devices like the Lenovo Legion Go S.
“We’ve been innovating in the console space for a long time. Working together across the industry is about how we can bring the innovations we’ve cultivated and developed on consoles to PC. Ronald said at CES 2025: The Verge.
Bringing the Xbox “experience” to all Windows PCs has also been discussed, with plans being envisioned to improve current features and “combine” the Xbox and Windows experiences to make them better and more streamlined.
“We’ve spent the last 20 years building world-class operating systems, but they’re really limited to consoles, so I would say we combine the best of Xbox and Windows,” Ronald said. The Verge. “What we’re doing is focusing on how we can bring these experiences to the broader Windows ecosystem for both players and developers.”

Menus aren’t optimized for miniature, touchscreen environments, and games don’t always run smoothly. There have been compatibility issues in the past, including undersized menus, pop-ups that interfere with gameplay, and especially eye-catching menus. This is one of the reasons why Steam Decks are so popular. The SteamOS UI is intentional and provides easy and seamless access to games.
sugar The VergeMicrosoft is well aware of this problem and is developing solutions (and new interfaces) to improve the portable Windows experience.
“We’re focused on simplifying it and making it much more similar to the console experience,” Ronald said. “Our goal is to put the player and their libraries at the center of the experience, not all the (Windows) things they currently have to do.”
Ronald teased further information to arrive in late 2025, hinting at new developments aimed at ensuring users of the device have: Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go Going forward, you’ll have a better overall gaming experience on Windows.
Notably, Microsoft also recently discussed plans to create its own gaming handheld, which would likely benefit from future changes to the gaming experience on all forms of Windows PCs. According to comments from Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, this device is still a few years away.
