hey! My name is Chloe Appleby. Let me be honest. In 2024, amazing new minds from around the world are releasing fantastic new works. So many titles have not only surprised audiences, but also changed the way people perceive games. There were so many games on my mind this year that I had a hard time picking a small list. But for me, 2024 was the year of my favorite genre: detective mystery games! There’s nothing more invigorating than starting a mystery game, putting on your Detective Pikachu hat, drinking a fresh cup of coffee, and falling into the delusion that you can solve a real crime by just finding some string, a wrench, and a parrot ball. On the spot. Not all of my best games are detective games, but most of them are.
1. Neva nomada studio
This is my GOTY for 2024. This is a visually stunning game that takes players into the world of protagonist Alba and her connection to a lone wolf cub. Grow into incredibly caring roles for both characters, and together they fight against the mysterious dark forces that plague and corrupt the world.
In this subtle nod to the state of the world, I’m still thinking: Neva After playing it on a plane to Japan, the emotional impact it had on me. (Don’t play. Neva If you sob uncontrollably at the end of the plane, you’ll get some strange looks.)
2. infinity nikki Manufacturer: Infold Games
I have never played Nikki I played a game in the series before, and it revealed how much I’ve been missing out on in my life. I love wearing fun outfits, being a diva, flying around in bubble dresses, and showing the Miraland stylists that I’m better than them. It is a place where cute aesthetics, the mystery of girl code, and a space of memories swirl. breath of the wild. First of all? Solve the town’s mysteries in style.
3. Thank you for being here! With a coal dinner
As a half-British person, I grew up watching British comedy shows like keep up appearances, black addition, Only fools and horses and IT Crowd Playing this game with my family took me right back to my childhood. We walked through each scenario while the salesman kept me on my toes and stitched all the solutions and interactions together. Fish and chips, shocking chunks of meat, Matt Berry – need I say more? Yeah, go and have fun.
4. No case should remain unresolved by Somi
No case should remain unresolved This game, recommended to me by Shuhei Yoshida, changed the way I perceive puzzle games and their storylines (plus, we’re best friends now). This mystery game puts you in the shoes of a detective investigating the unsolved case of a missing girl.
As we slowly unfold what actually happened in the past, we piece together the memory fragments of the conversation and connect them to the correct speaker. The twist in this story had me shocked for hours and Somi (the developer) is a blast to watch.
5. Detective Riddell Posted by Puzzlab
Sydney-based studio Puzzlab has created a lovingly crafted mix of mystery game and interactive novel that pays homage to escape rooms. In this game, you follow detective Riddell and journalist and her future girlfriend Lucy as they solve a train murder case through various puzzles.
Because I had to bring a notebook and pencil for this piece, I became more immersed in the story. When you play this game, you’ll know that it was made by room escape enthusiasts, and I’ll be playing the sequel when it comes out!
6. Rise of the Golden Idol Manufacturer: Color Gray Games
As a big fan of golden idol incidentI was hungry to see a sequel coming out. This game met all my expectations and then some! Clever, original, and gritty. The gameplay remains faithful to the original while adding new features, such as adding a mystery mini-game to each scenario. For the sake of humanity, I hope that the golden idol will never be discovered again, but for my own sake, I hope that it will continue to be discovered and misused.
