This is a story that has been going on for a long time. From high ups to extreme downturns, victorious teams have been humbled by sudden and shocking defeats. Today, G2 Esports was eliminated from IEM Rio, a $250,000 tournament in Brazil. Just a week ago, the same team won the $200,000 grand prize at the BLAST Premier Fall Final in Copenhagen.
What’s going on?
G2 collapses at IEM Rio
A week ago, G2 Esports made it through the BLAST Premier Fall Final, crushing the hopes of Team Spirit, Vitality, and Natus Vincere and securing the trophy and $200,000 in prize money. Earlier this year, in June, the team secured first place at IEM Dallas, earning an additional $100,00, before advancing to the Esports World Cup and finishing in a respectable second place.
And then something monumental happened in Brazil.
G2 fought hard against Heroic in their opening match in the top bracket at IEM Rio, but a 10-13 loss pushed the team to the bottom bracket. From there they clashed. eternal fireAnd the 2-0 sweep by the Turkish team effectively eliminated G2 Esports from the match.
Taking these losses into account, Eternal Fire has been on the market since 2021 and has won $860,000 in prize money, the largest amount of which was secured in the last six months. G2 has won approximately $6 million in prize money over a period of over 10 years.
If you look at the numbers alone, it’s annoying.
Eternal Fire will now advance against The MongolZ, but making it to the qualifiers will be a tough task. Eternal’s ‘woxic’ had positive things to say about the game ahead.
Tomorrow will be a more comfortable game. I’m not saying we’re going to beat them, but people will be more relaxed and more focused in their mindset and they’ll be telling themselves internally that we won. Champion and second place, how about winning this competition?

This has been a tough series and an even tougher tournament for G2. According to the stats, G2’s NiKo had the worst CS2 map and worst ‘big event’ rating. always. He was quite harsh about himself on social media after the game, which echoed the sentiments of fans around the world.
