Hackers targeting gaming companies know nothing. Companies will always choose not to pay because they won’t give any money at all, it rarely hurts their bottom line for people to find out about upcoming games, and there’s no guarantee they’ll be safe from future blackmail. We only care about employee data when it comes to board or CEO information. Because employees can be replaced and they don’t really care about them.
Even in the worst case scenario, like the case with insomnia, I think it’s better to pirate the game early, take the loss in sales, and get paid later, rather than actually paying the hackers.
