Sarah Matthews, a former press adviser to Donald Trump, praised Kamala Harris for “stepping into the lion’s den” in a Fox News interview Wednesday and said she believes it makes a difference.
“I think it’s really important that Kamala Harris went into the lion’s den. She knew this was going to be a difficult interview and that it might not necessarily be fair,” Matthews told MSNBC on Wednesday.
She used the misleading clip to whitewash Trump’s controversial comments in which he described “radical left-wing lunatics” as “the enemy within” when Harris called her interviewer, Fox News host Brett Baier. He said accusing him of doing so was a “really powerful moment.”
“Brett, I’m sorry. With all due respect, the video was not talking about the ‘enemy within’ which he repeated when speaking about the American people. That’s not what you just showed,” Harris said in an interview.

Matthews suggested that this exchange presents facts and perspectives that Fox News viewers may not be familiar with.
“Fox News viewers who aren’t familiar with these comments may have seen her push back on them and thought to themselves, ‘What am I not showing?'” said. “And maybe they went home and Googled it and saw the statement themselves and saw him double down on it.”
Matthews endorsed Harris earlier this week.
She told MSNBC she had never voted for a Democrat before and argued that with the election just weeks away, it’s important to see a Republican voice say ‘enough is enough’ from disgruntled Republicans. We need to say to Donald Trump, ‘It’s okay to put policy aside in this election and vote for Kamala Harris.’”
