In Hillary Clinton’s Democratic National Convention speech, which Michael Steele called “perhaps the most richly ironic moment in political history,” the audience chanted “Lock him up.”
“You could see it in her face at some point. She just seemed to go with the rhythm. And I don’t blame her,” the former Republican National Committee chairman said on MSNBC Monday night.
“She’s always been a monster to a lot of Republicans for a long time,” he continued. “But the whole idea of locking her up for a crime she didn’t commit and a misdeed she never engaged in, and now here’s someone running for president with 34 convictions — yeah, it’s a little ironic that that moment is unfolding.”
Former President Donald Trump, whose 2016 campaign rallying cry against Clinton was “lock her up,” was convicted in May of 34 counts of falsifying business records. His sentencing is scheduled for September 18. The Republican nominee also faces dozens of other felony charges in other cases.
Clinton smiled during her speech but did not respond to the cheers.
Trump frequently called for Clinton to be jailed during the 2016 presidential campaign, criticizing her for improper use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. Clinton was investigated by the federal government for her email use, but she was never charged with a crime.
After Trump was convicted, he tried to rewrite history, claiming he never said the three-word phrase about Clinton.
