Former Manchester United midfielder Anderson has been jailed for failing to pay child support, reports have emerged.
Brazilian news outlet GZH (via talkSPORT) reported that Anderson had been told he must repay £45,000 in debt or face serving time in Porto Alegre’s Irmao Miguel Darío prison.
He reportedly faces up to 30 days in jail.
Anderson received an ultimatum from a family court judge last Thursday.
The 36-year-old has been offered the option of serving his prison sentence under a “semi-open” system, which would see the former United player work or study outside the prison during the day and then go back to sleep at night.
This isn’t Anderson’s first brush with the law.
In 2021, he was accused of laundering £4.7 million through cryptocurrencies. He was named as one of eight people being investigated by state prosecutors for their alleged involvement in a scheme to steal cash from the state stock exchange.
It is unclear at this time whether this investigation is still ongoing or whether Anderson has been cleared of his charges.
The Brazilian is believed to have had nine children.
Anderson won four Premier League titles during a highly successful eight years at Old Trafford.
He joined the Red Devils from Porto in July 2007. He also played for Fiorentina in Italy and Internacional in his home country before hanging up his boots at the age of 31.
At United he never quite lived up to his potential, with Ben Foster previously revealing that a stern Sir Alex Ferguson once wanted to beat him with a stick.
Anderson has eight caps for Brazil’s senior national team.
