“Trump lost by 7 million votes (in 2020),” Stevens told MSNBC’s Ali Vitali. “He needs new customers. What is he doing to get new customers?”
Stevens said Trump is “stuck” in the polls at around 46% — the approval rating he had when he lost the 2020 election — because he has no new vision, promises or policies to attract new voters.
“Even when he went up against Biden after that bad debate, he had a hard time getting above 47%,” he said.
Stevens, who worked on Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign and is now with the anti-Trump Republican group Lincoln Project, said the race could end up being a very close one.
“I think the more likely scenario is that this race will be tight until October 20th, 25th, and then the bottom will start to fall because Trump can’t get new voters,” he said. “That’s what happened with Carter in ’80, and I think there are a lot of parallels here.”
Politics requires additions, he said, but Trump is doing nothing to add new voters.
