Final Fantasy XIV offers a variety of ways to level up each of the 22 different classes you can play as, which is a good thing since the Dawntrail expansion had a max level of 100. That’s a lot of grinding! One of the oldest and most traditional ways to increase your experience bar is FATE grinding, which began in A Realm Reborn.
In this guide, we’ll take a look at the different types of FATEs in Final Fantasy XIV. Find out which FATEs are the most beneficial and which areas you should grind in to get the best results. Read on for our FFXIV FATE grinding guide.

1. Benefits of FATE Grinding
FATE or Full Active Time Events are time-limited group events that are constantly spawning in any open area. They consist of a variety of tasks to complete, such as killing waves of enemies, killing bosses, collecting materials, or defending objectives, and are designed to be performed by groups of players together.
FATE is just one of several ways to level up your profession in Final Fantasy XIV, but it’s definitely not the most efficient source. While grinding FATE can be tedious, there are still plenty of reasons why you might want to pick FATE to gain experience.
- FATE is Simple and fastIt requires a little less focus to complete as a group. It’s the perfect mindless activity to engage in while watching your favorite movie on another screen.
- Completing a regular FATE can sometimes result in a very rare FATE, which will reward you with special currency when completed. Exclusive rewards like mounts, cosmetics, and minions.
- Starting in the Shadowbringers area Shared FATE System FATEs have been introduced, which are used as a progression system for each individual zone. Completing a FATE will increase your rank within that zone and also grant you rewards. Bicolor gemstoneA special currency that can be exchanged for special rewards and materials.
2. Types of FATE
There are currently five different types of FATEs in FFXIV. I’ll prioritize them below, from most efficient (quickest to complete) to least efficient.
Kill the boss – The goal is to kill one boss-type enemy. Depending on the number of participants, these FATEs can be completed very quickly and should be prioritized over others.
Kill the enemy – The goal is to kill waves of regular enemies until the bar fills up. Players can casually complete this FATE in a short amount of time by spamming AoE damage and healing spells.
collect – The goal is to pick up and hand over special items to the indicated NPC. Once the player has handed over the appropriate amount of items for a gold level (around 8-12), they can leave this FATE and move on to the next FATE, receiving credits when the timer runs out.
Defend – The goal is to defend a specific object or NPC for a set amount of time. These FATEs are completed only after the timer runs out, so other players cannot rush them.
Escort – The goal is to escort an NPC to a designated location. Like Defend FATE, this is a slower FATE to complete, as it can only be completed once the NPC has reached their final destination.
In a typical FATE grinding party, the group will prioritize boss and enemy FATEs first, then prioritize collecting FATEs, and generally ignore defensive and escort FATEs.

3. Tips for FATE grinding
- Join a political party or start your own. Grouping up with other people is the easiest way to earn gold medals in each FATE. Use /shout chat to find a FATE party, or use the in-game Party Finder tool to team up with other people.
- You have access to flying vehicles. The ability to fly around an area rather than being stuck to the ground is essential to playing FATE, and will prevent you from being left in the dust and missing out on an opportunity to engage.
- Take advantage of your job’s strengths It is beneficial for maximizing participation.
- Tanks should chain their AoE skills to arouse as much hostility from enemies as possible.
- Healers can quickly tag enemies with instant-cast spells and unleash area-of-effect healing spells on the party.
- DPS can tag enemies and fire their AoE skills in rapid succession to maximize damage.
4. Twist of Fate and other buffs
For FATEs in Stormblood and later zones, rare enemies may spawn that, when killed, grant participating players the following: Twist of fate buff.
While FATE is in progress in these areas, the player can “The smell of death drew the lonely maiden into the battlefield!” is in the chat box. This indicates spawn. lonely maiden Monsters. Defeating a monster will reward all players with a Twist of Fate buff, regardless of whether the FATE has been completed or not. Defeating a Forlorn Maiden will give players a chat message “The lonely girl disappears.“
In rarer cases, more powerful monsters appear. lonely Can spawn.
The Fate Twist buff grants the player a 15% XP bonus when completing a FATE, with the bonus increasing from 50% (obtained from Forlorn Maiden) to a maximum of 250% (obtained from The Forlorn) the next time the player completes a FATE.
Additionally, FATEs in Stormblood and beyond can randomly grant experience bonuses. FATE markers will have a special honeycomb icon and when you hover over them, the message “(Experience Bonus Applied)” will appear.

Are there any other ways to level up quickly in FFXIV?
In addition to grinding FATEs, FFXIV offers a variety of ways to level up your professions. We’ve listed some of the best ones below.
Duty Roulette
using Finding a duty FFXIV’s system is by far the most efficient and reliable way to gain daily experience. All Duty Roulette activities can be performed repeatedly, but you can only receive bonus experience once per day per Duty. The best Duty Roulettes to perform daily are:
- leveling – (Requires level 16)
- Level 50/60/70/80 dungeon – (Requires level 50)
- test – (Requires level 50)
- Key Scenarios – (Requires level 50)
- Alliance Raid – (Requires level 50)
- Normal attack – (Requires level 60)
- Frontline (PVP) – (Requires level 30)
Additionally, completing the duty roulette will reward you with valuable rewards. slate Currently available to purchase iLvl equipment and weapons.
Dungeon Spamming
If you can form your own light party, repeatedly completing the highest dungeons that are appropriate for your current level is a very efficient way to gain experience. If you can’t form a full group or are playing solo, expect longer wait times, especially when playing as a DPS class.
Deep Dungeon
Deep Dungeons like Palace of the Dead, Heaven on High, and Eureka Orthos are another efficient way to gain experience, and are especially valuable when soloing as a DPS class. Since Deep Dungeons don’t require the typical light party composition (tank, healer, two damage dealers), they tend to have much shorter queue times, no matter what role you go with.
- Palace of Death – (Requires level 17)
- Heaven on high – (Requires level 61)
- Eureka Orthos – (Requires level 81)
Main scenario and side quests
The main scenario questline rewards a ton of experience points, but it’s not the most reliable way to level up, since you can only complete it once.
Side quests are scattered throughout Eorzea and reward experience and gil, but are not very efficient or reliable for leveling up. Like the main scenario quests, most side quests can only be completed once.
Purchase a job level boost (One Hero’s Journey)
Square Enix sells level boosts for most classes in the game through the FFXIV online store, usually priced at $25.00 USD, though they are often sold at a discount. Buy A Hero’s Journey boost provides:
- (1) Adventure story book – When used, the task will be upgraded to the minimum level of its current extension.
- (50) Allagan Platinum Piece – Each can be sold for 10,000 gil, total 500,000 gil
- Trusted Accessory Safe – You can obtain 5 iLvl 660 accessories.
