A fake account on social media platform
Analysts at Israeli tech company Cyabra used a subset of artificial intelligence machine learning to identify fake accounts and shared the report’s findings with media outlets ahead of its release on Friday.
The company found that 15% of X accounts praising former President Trump and criticizing President Biden on the platform formerly known as Twitter were fake. 7% of accounts praising Biden and criticizing Trump are also fake.
The study examined posts over a two-month period starting March 1. We researched popular hashtags and determined whether the posts were positive, negative, or neutral.
The analysis found that newly discovered fake accounts increased by up to 10-fold during March and April.
Of the 94,363 Trump-supporting profiles, 12,391 were found to be false. Of Biden’s 10,065 supporting accounts, 803 were fake.
The report found that pro-Trump accounts were pushing two messages. One is “Vote for Trump” and the other is “Biden is the worst president in American history.”
Rafi Mendelsohn, Cyabra’s vice president, said the messages showed a level of coordination, suggesting there was a “nefarious goal” and “an entire operation” behind the account’s creation.
The accounts supporting Biden were not part of a coordinated campaign, the report said.
The report did not say where the fake accounts came from, but the FBI warned that China, Russia and Iran are among foreign adversaries seeking to influence the 2024 election.
Each adversary has a different approach to interference, but all aim to sow discord and undermine democracy, FBI officials said earlier this month.
