Drone Remote ID has been coming in for a while, and the original compliance date was just a few days away in September 2023. But the FAA recognizes that many pilots are currently having trouble finding approved hardware, giving us all a little breathing room. .
The new FAA Drone Remote ID compliance date is March 16, 2024.
The system is in place, the FAA wants you to comply as quickly as possible, and they won’t enforce anything until 2024. Remember that enforcement can include fines and revocation of your pilot certification.
Please note that remote IDs come in three forms:
- standard remote ID – Drones with built-in FAA-approved remote ID capabilities. All drones manufactured after early 2023 must include this feature.
- Remote ID Broadcast Module – A drone attachment that provides remote ID functionality.
- cold (Pre-approved flight zone) – This is an area where you can legally fly a drone without remote ID.
Each of the above options has pros and cons, as well as additional benefits and limitations, but these are currently the only three methods available to meet remote identity authentication.
