Extreme E, the premium off-road EV racing series, is turning to hydrogen. The series announced this week that it is rebranding and unveiled a hydrogen-powered race car called the Pioneer 25 to guide the transition. The first season is scheduled to begin in Saudi Arabia in April 2025, before moving on to the UK, Germany, Italy and finishing in the US.
Extreme E tests electric off-road vehicles in extreme environments like (you guessed it) the desert. Several major teams participated. This year marks the fourth season of Extreme E. Commenting on the transition to hydrogen, founder and CEO Alejandro Agague said the movement is “not just about electric mobility, but about creating green power solutions that can be applied everywhere, from remote areas to bustling cities.”
“By launching Extreme H, we are not only demonstrating the viability of hydrogen as a fuel source, but also testing the wider hydrogen ecosystem, including refuelling and hydrogen transportation, and helping to create a market for it,” Agag wrote. Extreme H’s flagship race car, the Pioneer 25, is powered by a 75kW hydrogen fuel cell.
