Late 2024 has finally arrived, and questions about the future of the PlayStation 5 Pro are starting to arise much more frequently. Is it still happening? Will the PS5 Pro be released in 2024? When will the console be revealed? And so on.
Admittedly, the recent discussion about the PS5 Pro missing its Holiday 2024 launch was fueled by my tweet. People have been relatively passive in suggesting that I am suggesting the Pro will miss its Holiday 2024 launch or be canceled entirely, but that is not the case at the time of writing.
Developers will be able to submit applications supporting PlayStation 5 Pro to CertOps (Platform Certification and Operations) on July 30, a date that was reportedly set 18 months ago. Additionally, any applications for PlayStation 5 that are released after September 15 will need to support PlayStation 5 Pro (this does not mean that PS5 Pro will be released on September 16). So while it is not an exact release date, PlayStation 5 Pro will be released later this year, according to information PlayStation disclosed to developers earlier this week.
According to a document sent to me in mid-2023, the PlayStation 5 Pro was scheduled for release in late November 2024.
While the Pro appears to be on track, multiple sources have expressed concerns about the console launching later this year, primarily due to the limited number of first-party games that will utilize the feature. However, as far as the documentation goes (90-95% of my reports are documented), there is nothing to suggest that the PS5 Pro has been delayed or canceled.
Officially, PlayStation has yet to publicly confirm or acknowledge the existence of the PS5 Pro. Still, developers are hard at work behind the scenes on PS5 development kits, with PS5 Pro test kits also set to be released this spring.
As for when the PS5 Pro will be announced, it will most likely coincide with the PlayStation 4 Pro marketing announcement that followed the console’s announcement in September. As many in the community have pointed out, Sony will be attending the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) in September, the first time the company has attended the show in five years. It’s not yet known if the PS5 Pro will be announced at that event, but it’s possible Sony/PlayStation will attend the show to talk about the Pro and its features, with the possibility of a reveal earlier this month instead.
