The 24-year-old has played for England and Scotland at Under-20 level but is ready to feature in Townsend’s side.
Mail Sport understands he will be part of Scotland’s squad for games against Canada, USA, Chile and Uruguay in July, when he is named on Wednesday.
Warr spoke regularly with Townsend through senior convocations. He is one of a number of new players the Scotland manager is keeping an eye on in the coming months.
He qualified for Scotland through his mother, who is from Strathaven. He also wore the blue shirt for the national under-18 and under-19 teams.
Sale Sharks star Gus Warr is set to join the Scotland senior team.
Warr has emerged as Sale Sharks’ first choice No9 this season.
Scotland boss Townsend has already spoken to the player.
With Scotland’s age-grade system struggling to produce players, Townsend is keen to add depth to the squad with qualified players from around the world.
Mail Sport understands Scotland have also explored the option of selecting hooker Jack Singleton, who is now eligible to change country as he played the last of his three caps for England in 2019.
However, it seems unlikely that the front-row forward, who is currently on loan at French side Toulon from Gloucester, will be selected by Townsend this week.
Instead, young prostitutes Paddy Harrison and Gregor Hiddleston are called out.
Townsend is also a huge fan of Saracens flyhalf Fergus Burke, who will join New Zealand side Crusaders’ Premiership squad this summer.
Burke is eligible to play for England as well as Scotland.
Burke and center Mosese Tuipulotu are two players currently based in the Southern Hemisphere who could soon be seen in a Scotland shirt as early as this summer.

The fact that the Crusaders and Tuipulotu’s Waratahs failed to make the Super Rugby play-offs could prompt a switch north.
As revealed by MailSport in May, Tuipulotu will join Edinburgh next season. There’s every chance he could join his brother Sione in Townsend’s team this week.
They include Warr’s Sale colleague Arron Reed. Like Warr, Reed is also eligible to play for England. He was part of Scotland’s Six Nations squad earlier this year, but he did not play in the match.
Scotland plays four summer games. The first game is against Canada on July 6 in Ottawa.
Townsend’s side heads south to meet America at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., on July 12.
Matches against Chile in Santiago and Uruguay in Montevideo on July 20 and 27 complete an eclectic yet important tour in which Scotland should indeed aim for four wins.
