Mumbai is often considered the “city of dreams” because it promises opportunity and success. Whenever something happens, the media always talks about the “spirit of Mumbai” and how the city continues to function despite facing many challenges. “ by Payal KapadiaEverything we imagine is light,’ depicts a special journey of three immigrant women exploring life through a city full of mysteries. What viewers witness next is a breathtaking story that walks the fine line between dreams and reality, weaving a story that is as haunting as it is beautiful.
The movie begins with an introduction to the main characters, Prabha (played by Kani Kusruti) and Anu (played by Divya Prabha). Prabha works as a nurse at a suburban Mumbai hospital and is estranged from her husband, who lives in Germany. She lives with her young colleague Anu, who is dating a Muslim boy named Shiraz (played by Hridhu Haroon). After spending most of the day in the hospital, the duo take time away from their busy schedules to travel around the city and enjoy each other’s company. We are also introduced to a woman named Parvati (Chaya Kadam) who works as a cafeteria worker at the same hospital. At its core, “ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT” is a meditation on the inner struggles of its protagonists, revealing their vulnerabilities, desires, and fears.

One of the best and boldest aspects of the film is that it delves into the complexities of the human psyche and presents a profound and introspective storyline. The non-linear narrative follows the protagonist as he navigates his personal life and collective trauma, but Kapadia doesn’t shy away from creating a world where reality is blurred by fantasy. We tend to think about what we can’t have and create scenarios in our heads about how we would react if that need was suddenly met. This is what this movie is mainly about and what resonates deeply with people. Meanwhile, the storyline deepens through universal themes of love, loss, identity, and self-discovery. The director did a great job of creating compelling storylines for each of the film’s main characters. This not only allows viewers to go deeper into the lives of these characters, but also gives them the opportunity to connect with them on a more personal level. Moreover, the decision to shift the film between past and present gives it a dream-like quality that stays with the viewer long after it ends.
The screenplay is another aspect that takes the film to a whole new level. There are only a few Indian films that feature poetic and realistic narratives. “ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT” by Payal Kapadia is one of them and perfectly blends elements of magical realism with a grounded human experience. Although the line is minimal, the impact it has on the audience is enormous and is enough for them to understand its meaning. Her screenplay is full of metaphors and layers that are eventually revealed, providing a satisfying experience for audiences who want to see an intelligent and emotional film.
Apart from the writing and directing, the film is outstanding in the way it presents Mumbai and its landscapes. The cinematography is breathtaking and each frame feels like a painting. This helps enhance the viewing experience of the film and deepens its emotional resonance.

Kani Kusruti as Prabha is mesmerizing in this film and gives one of the best performances of the year. She leaves no stone unturned to show the viewer how Prabha feels in the situation and even though the scene asks her to put on a stone face, the viewer realizes how she feels. Kusruti is a force to be reckoned with and deserves all the praise she receives for her impeccable skills.
Meanwhile, Divya Prabha adds another layer to the film with her amazing performance. Her acting is subtle and natural. Her spontaneity is really great and makes her character seem more relatable. The chemistry between Kasunti and Prabha is the highlight of the film and amplifies the overall impact of the film. Meanwhile, Chhaya Kadam continues her golden era with this film. She took India by storm with her flawless performance in ‘Lapatha Ladies’ and gave another great performance in this film as well.
