Phoenix — Eugenio Suarez had a home run, a double and three RBIs, Geraldo Perdomo allowed three hits and played excellent defense in the ninth, and the Arizona Diamondbacks won 7-5 over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night.
After Atlanta won its first five games, the Diamondbacks beat the Braves for the first time this season.
“We’re a really good team, and we never give up,” Suarez said. “We came here to get 27 outs and we did better today. We gave it our all on the field, and that’s why we got the ‘W.'”
Paul Seward snapped a three-blow save streak in the ninth, recording his 12th of the season. He got help from Perdomo, who dove to right for a grounder and then got up and threw to first to get Travis d’Arnaud’s first out.
With the score tied at five, Corbin Carroll doubled to the right-center gap off Joe Jiménez (1-3) to start the eighth. Ketel Marte advanced him to third with an infield single, Joc Pederson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Christian Walker walked on a full count to put Arizona ahead. Perdomo added a sacrifice fly to make it 7-5.
Suarez He started the night with a 452-foot, two-run homer. In the top of the second, Charlie Morton’s pitch landed in the upper tier of the left field seats, tying the game at 2-2.
“I was prepared for it,” Suarez said. “I took my best swing and hit a big home run. I’ve been working on it.”
Suarez doubled down the left-field line in the seventh to put the D-backs ahead 4-3. It was another good game for the third baseman, who is starting to turn his season around after a slow start. The 11-year veteran hit .205 with seven home runs on the night.
Morton allowed four runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out five. The 40-year-old right-hander was replaced in the seventh after giving up a single to Perdomo, and Suárez doubled to Pierce Johnson.
Jose Herrera hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to extend the D-backs lead to 5-3.
“This is the first time our bullpen has given up a lead in a long time,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “That’s going to happen.”
The Braves responded immediately when Ozuna hit a two-run homer off Ryan Thompson (5-3). It was Ozuna’s 24th homer of the season, and it flew 441 feet over the center field wall.
D’Arnaud gave the Braves a 2-0 lead in the second inning, hitting a double over Carroll’s head in right field, scoring Marcell Ozuna and Eddie Rosario.
The Braves took a 3-2 lead in the third on Matt Olson’s sacrifice fly. The D-backs struck back in the bottom of the inning with Ketel Marte’s solo home run to right-center.
Arizona’s Slade Cecconi allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in four innings. He struck out three.
Atlanta’s Austin Riley went 3-for-4 with two doubles.
