There’s a debate surrounding our midfield this week.
We all have our own opinions and thoughts on Enzo Fernandes and it is probably safe to say that he is better suited to other leagues. But despite that, I think he is a class player and can still earn a place in this Chelsea team.
Now he’s dropped to Chelsea’s B team, but I think that’s because Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer are better. Or is he more important to this starting Xl than Fernandez?
But Fernandes has a lot to offer if you use him correctly and are willing to provide runners at the end of the pass. His vision is incredible and, at the time of writing, he is a true creator of the midfield, with five assists in his last three games for club and country.
I’ve always rated Fernandes, but he was a bit hit or miss at Chelsea. Perhaps some of that was due to problems in his personal life. What I mean is, separation from family can have a serious impact on one’s mind, so maybe we should give him some space.
I think he’s technically great. I also think he could be the assist king in this Chelsea side.
I believe he will be asked to leave in the summer if he does not play a league game. Who could blame him? There is already serious interest from clubs. But should Chelsea, and more importantly Enzo Maresca, actually look to bring him back and ‘save’ his Chelsea career?
But the only way we can do that now is by moving Cole Palmer to the right side. And there’s a whole different debate right there.
Palmer had some trouble in the middle when he was man-marked. So would moving him to the right solution be a good solution? What is the solution to bring Fernandez back into the starting Xl for league games and line-up him in a midfield three with Lavia and Caicedo? If they start all three, that means Enzo plays with 10, and to me that doesn’t work. He needs to play deeper so he can impact the game with his passes.
To be honest, I’m very divided about all of this. I like Palmer in the middle. Because I think he can dictate the play and control the game better. But I also see a call to move him back to the right and I can see the benefit of that as well. Will Maresca do that? I’m not sure.
