England’s impressive progress under Steve Borthwick has been dealt a major blow after the RFU confirmed the departure of the team’s head of strength and conditioning, Aled Walters.
Under Borthwick, England finished third at last year’s World Cup, performed impressively again in the 2024 Six Nations and crushed New Zealand in two Tests in the Southern Hemisphere last month. Walters has been instrumental in that team’s progress.
He is renowned as one of the best in the business and was instrumental in working with Borthwick to win the Gallagher Premiership with Leicester Tigers in 2022.
Walters followed Borthwick to England, along with his current assistants Kevin Sinfield and Richard Wigglesworth.
He previously played a key role in South Africa’s victory at the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

England have been impressive under Borthwick’s leadership, having beaten New Zealand to the death in their recent Test series.
The reasons for Walters’ departure are yet to be revealed, but he will leave the RFU this summer and will not play in England’s autumn Test matches.
“We would like to thank Allred for his contribution to the UK,” said Borthwick.
‘Aled is a great coach and has worked hard to develop the current squad over the last 12 months.
‘He left us with the best wishes for our future.’
Walters said: ‘I have had some great memories coaching England and would like to thank Steve.’
