CSA Invitational XI Beats 289 (Senokwane 79, Lawes 4-38, Akhter 3-51) and 256 (Hermann 131). England Lions Runs at 154 and 107 x 284
The four-day match at Western Province Cricket Club concluded a three-week tour of South Africa, with the Lions’ 19-man party focused on what the ECB described as “personalized, high-quality training”.
But the same two were back in action with the bat too quickly after the Lions were 72 for 7 in their first innings, putting together an eighth-wicket stand of 78.
Captain Dan Mousley, who recently made his England white-ball debut in the Caribbean, was on 24 for a while but Lawes (48 from 38) and Zaman (32 from 39) performed well. However, the Lions lost their last three wickets for four runs, conceding a first-innings deficit of 135.
The Lions, who decided to rotate teams throughout the match, used a total of eight bowlers. This includes recent England debutant John Turner, while Derbyshire’s Pat Brown, a T20I international in 2019, was selected after taking 4 for 44 in 12 overs.
Setting a nominal target of 392, the Lions’ lack of batting average was once again exposed. Yusuf and de Swardt took two wickets each as the visitors collapsed to 39 for 5, and this time Farhan Ahmed kept CSA for a while with 29 to 24. Tsepo Ndwandwa ended the contest with 3 for 23 from 6.5 overs.
