Sam Underhill will miss England’s Six Nations squad after undergoing surgery for an ankle injury.
The flanker picked up the injury during Bath’s defeat by Northampton on Sunday, aggravating the same joint he damaged during England’s autumn campaign.
Although Underhill is not England’s central contract player, he has been one of the country’s most consistent performers.
There is no set length for his recovery, but England’s first Test against Ireland is just three weeks away.
Earlier this week Bath manager Johan van Graan said: ‘Sam injured his ankle setting up for Max Ozomo’s try but he was pretty sore after the game and that was a bit of a worry for him.

‘Sam is very important for us and plays very well in big games. ‘If you look back at the Premiership final, he was one of the best players that day.’
With Steve Borthwick set to be named in the England squad on Tuesday, Underhill’s injury leaves room for the likes of Tom Willis and Henry Pollock to break into the squad.
