Maro Itoje has been appointed as England representative for the upcoming Guinness Six Nations, taking over from Jamie George.
Despite having led the team since the 2023 World Cup, George will take on the role of vice-captain alongside Ellis Genji.
This marks Itoje’s first permanent captaincy with the national team after serving as interim captain during matches when George was substituted and being recently appointed Saracens’ captain at the start of the season.
England manager Steve Borthwick has revealed his 36-man squad for the Six Nations, with Saracens’ eighth-placed Tom Willis named in the squad. However, omissions from the line-up include established prop Dan Cole and scrumhalf Ben Spencer.
“With 88 caps for England, Maro has been a central figure in this team for many years and brings tremendous experience both on and off the field,” Borthwick said.
“He is a calm and influential leader known for his commitment to high standards and his ability to motivate those around him.”
“His strong rapport with the team and coaches, combined with his leadership experience at Saracens, makes him ideally placed to take on this responsibility.
“I would like to acknowledge the outstanding leadership of Jamie George, who has made a significant contribution as captain and will continue to play an important role as vice-captain.”
George, 34, faces a battle to qualify for the 2027 World Cup and is fighting for a starting hooker spot under pressure from Luke Cowan-Dickie and Theo Dann.
There were also questions about whether George was fit for the captaincy, given that he was often substituted early in the second half when the game was out of balance.
England have won just five of their 12 Tests in 2024, suffering successive narrow defeats to France, New Zealand and Australia. “I am incredibly humbled and honored to be asked by Steve to captain England,” Itoje said.
“This is truly an incredible privilege for me and my family, and we are grateful for this opportunity. “The role comes with a lot of responsibility, but I am at a point in my career where I feel ready to take on the role of captain and give my all to serve the team and the fans and give my best on the field.
“It’s reassuring to know that I have a group of senior players supporting me and helping me build on the achievements of Jamie, who has led the team brilliantly and has been a great friend and leader for many years.
“I am excited about our squad who are hungry for success and look forward to leading them for the upcoming Six Nations.”
