Fox News, citing sources, reported that the Secret Service opened fire on a gunman outside the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, but former President Donald Trump was safe.
Authorities are treating the incident as a potential assassination attempt and have taken a suspect into custody, a U.S. official told Fox News. The man, who was not immediately identified, was reportedly holding a rifle when agents shot him.
“It doesn’t look like some random guy walking out of Trump’s club with an AK-47,” the official added.
Lucas Tomlinson of Fox News confirmed that the Secret Service opened fire after seeing a man raise an AK-47. The suspect fled in a car, but authorities said he was quickly apprehended.
Trump was on the fifth hole of the course when shots rang out and his security detail rushed him to the safety of the clubhouse. The incident could be the second attempt on the former president’s life in just two months.
Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity cited local law enforcement as saying the suspect’s rifle was found in the bushes. Hannity also confirmed with local law enforcement that four shots were fired. Hannity said Trump’s first reaction inside the clubhouse was to check on everyone.
Fox News host Bret Baier also interviewed Trump, who praised the Secret Service’s quick response. Trump reassured Baier that he was fine and that there was no evidence of any shots fired or injuries near him.
“Tell everybody I’m OK, and tell them the Secret Service did a great job,” Trump told Buyer.
The Secret Service is working closely with authorities to investigate the situation, and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has been briefed.
“The Secret Service, in cooperation with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former President is safe,” the agency confirmed in a post to X.
The White House acknowledged the incident.
“The President and the Vice President have been briefed on the security incident that occurred at the Trump International Golf Course where former President Trump was playing golf. They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will receive regular updates from their teams,” the White House said in a statement.

The shooting near Trump comes nearly two months after an assassination attempt on the former president. Trump was shot in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. At the rally, volunteer firefighter Cory Comperatore was killed by a gunman who was then shot and killed by a Secret Service sniper.
