Earlier this year, The Acolyte debuted on Disney+ to impressive streaming numbers. But despite not having a finale for the first season, Disney+ has canceled The Acolyte and the Star Wars series will not continue.
According to Deadline, the decision was made to end The Acolyte less than a month after its first season concluded. The show was the first live-action Star Wars project set in the High Republic era and starred Amandla Stenberg as twin sisters Osha and Mae.
The Acolyte seems to have fallen victim to a review bombshell, but that wasn’t the case for the series. The show’s two-part premiere in June was the biggest Disney+ premiere of the year, with 4.8 million viewers on its first day. That grew to 11.1 million viewers in its first week. But The Acolyte’s momentum evaporated after its third episode, and it dropped out of the streaming charts’ top 10. The season finale returned to the top 10 with 335 million minutes watched, which may be the lowest-ever Star Wars finale.
Series creator Lesley Headland has shared some of her ideas for The Acolyte season 2, but the ultimate fate of the surviving characters may not be revealed unless Lucasfilm decides to pursue the story as a novel or comic.
