Aphiwe Dyanti scored twice in the second half to earn Vodacom Bulls a late draw with the Cheetahs in the Currie Cup in Bloemfontein on Friday.
Despite leading by seven points at half-time, Vodacom Bulls needed two tries from Dyanthi and a 50-metre penalty from full-back Boeta Chamberlain in the second half to see the Cheetahs hold on for a 34-34 draw.
Springbok winger Canon Moody assisted a try early in the second half to put the unbeaten Bulls ahead 24-3 as they look to secure their first win in Bloemfontein since 2018.
But the Cheetahs fought back strongly, scoring four tries in succession, with number eight Friedl Olivier sparking the comeback while Cohen Jasper, Mounier Hartzenberg and Karl Wagner also added goals.
In an exciting finish, DeAnti latched onto Chamberlain’s cross-field kick to score his second, but Cheetahs substitute hooker Vernon Paulo was sent over for a driving maul to give the home side a three-point lead with five minutes remaining.
Chamberlain remained calm just behind the halfway line to convert the penalty, and the Bulls remained level on points with a draw, having not attacked a scrum inside their own half.
The Bulls next travel to Nelspruit to take on the Pumas, while the Cheetahs travel to Cape Town to play DHL Western Province.
