Geraldo Perdomo hit a sacrifice fly with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to score Corbin Carroll, and the Arizona Diamondbacks won 5-4 over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night in Phoenix.
Alec Thomas hit a game-tying double in the eighth, giving the Diamondbacks their ninth win in 13 games and their first win over .500 since April 3.
George Springer had two hits but couldn’t prevent Toronto from falling to 4-3 in a nine-game road trip out of the West.
Carroll drew a leadoff walk against Chad Green (2-2) in the ninth, and Ketel Marte walked one out later. Carroll and Marte doubled and the Blue Jays intentionally walked Christian Walker after Green fell behind 2-0 in the count.
Perdomo then barely hit a fly ball down the left-field line, and Carroll easily beat a pitch from Dalton Bashaw.
Justin Martinez (4-1) led off the Diamondbacks’ top of the ninth with a perfect inning.
Arizona tied the game 4-4 in the eighth when Thomas hit a double to left-center off Trevor Richards with two outs. Perdomo and Eugenio Suarez, who walked and then went up on a wild pitch, easily scored on singles.
Toronto fell behind 2-0 until they scored in four straight innings on three sacrifice flies and a groundout.
Alejandro Kirk singled with one out in the fifth and advanced to third on Ernie Clement’s double to right. Kevin Kiermaier grounded out to second, scoring Kirk.
Springer led off the Blue Jays’ sixth with a triple into the right-center gap. Spencer Horwitz followed with a sacrifice fly to left.
In the seventh, Varsho hit a triple to the right field foul line and rolled to the corner. After Kirk grounded out to short, Clement hit a sacrifice fly after a nine-pitch duel with Arizona’s Ryne Nelson, scoring Varsho and putting Toronto ahead 3-2.
The Blue Jays added another run in the eighth when Leo Jimenez, Springer and Horwitz singled off Bryce Jarvis to start the inning. Guerrero hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Jimenez.
Nelson allowed three runs, five on balls, in seven innings. He struck out five and walked none.
Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the third when Kevin Newman hit a one-out double and Carroll singled.
The Diamondbacks added another run in the fourth when Randal Grichuk tripled to start the inning and later scored on Newman’s sacrifice fly.
Toronto starter Yariel Rodriguez allowed two runs and four hits in four innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
