More than any other story campaign Bungie has created in Destiny 2, The Final Shape is packed with mechanics. Instead of just shooting a bunch of bad guys, you’re often tasked with disabling mechanisms and solving puzzles to progress. The campaign’s second mission, Temptation, requires you to interact with three black sundials to disable three “conduits” and take down their shields. Here’s how it works:
Dials are scattered around The Landing and guarded by several enemies. Once you eliminate those troops, Taken Psions will appear nearby. Scions are the key to turning the dial and deactivating the conduit, but you need to look at the dial itself to know how many Scions to fire.
Each dial can be found near a floating triangular shard of darkness (which looks like a pyramid with the tip pointing down). If you get close to the dial, you’ll see spikes of orange light popping out of the nodes around the edge. The first dial has one spike, the second has two, and the third has three. These spikes tell you where to turn the dial, like a numeric lock.
Killing Insight Scions, which spawn in small groups around each dial, grants you a buff called Psionic Insight. Each Psion provides 1 stack of Psionic Insight. To activate a dial, you must collect insight and then “dunk” it into the dial using the nearby activation button.
Each stack of Psionic Insight moves the dial one step around the outer edge, so the trick is to look at the dial to see how many notches the spikes of orange light are around the circle, then collect that number of Psionic Insights to activate them. Turn the dial to rotate and stop at the lighted node.
In the end, there seems to be no penalty for omission – too much or too little insight – as long as you get the dial in the right spot. To do this quickly and efficiently, a dial allows you to put the Insight on either side to turn it clockwise or counterclockwise. So once you know how much psionic insight you need and which way you want to turn the dial, all you have to do is shoot your psion and return to the dial before the buff’s timer expires.
Each dial is slightly more complex than the previous one. You’ll notice that the second dial has two orange light spikes, one of which is much larger than the other. The third dial, on the other hand, has three spikes, each of different sizes. The size of the spikes indicates the order in which the dial should stop at each node, with the largest spike indicating the first node to stop, the next largest spike indicating the second point. Again, there doesn’t seem to be any penalty for mistakes other than spending more time shooting enemies, so don’t worry if you throw away too much or too little Insight.
Once you clear the area and disable each conduit, the shield will drop and you can continue your mission to track down the Crow. The best strategy against the dial is to take your time and eliminate enemies to keep yourself safe while you work on the mechanisms. Especially if you’re on legendary difficulty.
