Wallabies’ son of a gun Louis Lynagh has been ruled out of Italy’s Six Nations squad after undergoing knee surgery.
The Azzurri, as expected, omitted the 24-year-old winger when they announced their 30-man squad on Friday, just days after Lynagh underwent surgery to repair damage to the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee.
There is no date yet for his return, but Lynagh, the son of former Wallabies World Cup winner Michael Lynagh, is unlikely to continue his exciting international development in the competition, which runs from February to mid-March.
Lynagh, whose mother is Italian, was eligible to play for Italy, England and Australia but ultimately fulfilled her destiny with the Azzurri and got off to a good start last season with a try-scoring debut against Scotland. It continues to impress throughout the year.
However, he suffered an injury during Benetton Treviso’s match against fellow Italian club Gevre in Parma three days after Christmas and had to undergo surgery.
Treviso reported on Wednesday: “Tests carried out in London revealed a lesion in the lateral collateral ligament requiring surgery.
“The surgery was successful and the player will now begin the rehabilitation process.”
Lynagh herself declared in a social media post: “I will come back better.”
Italy begin their campaign with a trip to Edinburgh to face Scotland, and will feature an Australian winger in the squad in the form of veteran Melburnian Monty Ian, who has now made 35 caps.
The 30-year-old nephew of Digby Ioane and cousin of Pete Samu – both former Wallabies – has been playing rugby in France for Lyon and is part of a resurgent and confident Italy side. They finished last in the Six Nations for the first time in nine years.
