Rep. Ami Berra (D-Calif.) said Monday that Republicans are prepared to meet at the “50-yard line” and even the “40-yard line” because they are in the “majority.”
“So it’s clear that the American public wants a more secure border,” Bera told NewsNation’s Blake Burman. “Huge. Let’s meet at the 50-yard line. I’d even say we’ll go to the 40-yard line because they’re in the majority.”
President-elect Trump’s 2024 election victory and imminent return to the White House have rattled Democrats, who also lost control of the Senate in last year’s election and will remain in the House minority in the 119th Congress.
There has been ongoing conversation in the Democratic Party about the performance of candidates in this year’s polls. Some centrists say the party has gone too far to the left, while liberals have said it has not gone far enough.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said in a Fox News interview aired last month that his party’s new agenda “is going to be very aggressive right out of the gate.” In the interview, anchor Brett Baier asked Johnson about a New York Times report that the Speaker of the House would soon have to deal with a minority of Republicans in the House.
“Look, we’re very excited about this. “We have already proven that we can govern with a small majority.” Johnson answered. “And I’m confident that we can meet the conditions and get this agenda accomplished. And (it) will be very aggressive from the start.”
Berra said Monday on “The Hill” that he doesn’t believe his entire caucus will say, “Let’s work with Republicans.”
