WNBA star Deerica Hamby has filed a lawsuit against the league and her former team, the Las Vegas Aces, alleging discrimination and retaliation related to her pregnancy.
The Los Angeles Sparks player’s law firm recently announced in a press release via its PR firm that Hamby has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that the A’s “subjected Hamby to repeated acts of intimidation, discrimination and retaliation that culminated in the A’s trading Hamby (to the Los Angeles Sparks) in January 2023 because the star forward was pregnant.”
In January 2023, the mother of two posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Imagine expressing your fears as a woman and being pregnant in this job/world… and then feeling relieved that you are supported… and then having your back “got”… only to have it used against you. LOL.”
The federal lawsuit claims that after the player told coach Becky Hammon and Aces management that she was pregnant and made a public announcement at the championship parade, her treatment changed. Hamby says she was ordered to vacate team-provided housing and the team began to backtrack on its treatment, including its failure to pay tuition.
After an official investigation by the WNBA, the Los Vegas Aces coach was suspended for two games. The investigation found that Coach Hammon violated the team and league’s “Respect in the Workplace Policy.” The 2024 Paris Olympian took the issue to the court system because she felt the league did not do enough to correct the situation with the team or coach.
As mentioned earlier, the 30-year-old talented athlete is the mother of two children. Her daughter Amaya Marie was born from a previous relationship, and her son Legend Maree Scandrick was born in March 2023. Hamby shares her son with Orlando Scandrick.
Additional details about the amount Hamby is seeking in damages were not disclosed.
