It’s pretty common these days for developers to change their remasters or remakes, sometimes significantly to improve the experience for modern audiences. Or so they claim. Some developers go so far as to remove content that they feel the community won’t enjoy, but don’t ask the community at large. There are concerns about Capcom’s approach. So what about the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster censorship claims?
Is Dead Rising Deluxe Remastered censored?
If you spend any time watching or discussing video games online, you will come across loudmouths who are yelling about the need for some kind of censorship in every upcoming video game. Some complaints are based on reality, some are not. When the argument is focused solely on the rants, it is hard to tell what is what. But if you pay attention, you can follow the arguments yourself. For example, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster has censorship. Or so many people claim.
This censorship includes changes to dialogue, especially in the boss fights featuring Cliff Hudson. In the upcoming remaster, Cliff will no longer call the player a “dirty communist.” That dialogue line has been completely removed. It is offensive to people for a number of reasons, the main one being that the game is rated M and the dialogue from the original game needs to remain intact.
Second, Capcom removed the ability to take erotic photos to earn Prestige Points in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. In the original game, taking photos of a survivor’s chest would earn you points needed to level up. However, this system has been completely removed in the Remaster. Capcom said:
When developing Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, we did our best to make a game that would please existing fans and appeal to new players. As development progressed, we inevitably found that we couldn’t include everything from the original game. In the case of the Erotica points system, we discussed it for a long time and decided to remove it. It was not so much a response to the changing cultural climate as it was a system that rewarded points for this criterion. Furthermore, given Frank’s situation, it is not a proper reward for survival and is not a skill required for a journalist trying to survive the next 72 hours in a zombie apocalypse. However, players are still free to choose their photo subjects, and it is up to them to decide what photos they want to take to represent their journey, even if they don’t receive points.
