Washington — Congressman Donald Payne Jr. won the Democratic primary in New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District on Tuesday, more than a month later. he died of a heart attack.
Payne was running unopposed in the district, and his death came after the deadline for other candidates to appear on primary ballots.
The lawmaker’s office said the lawmaker was hospitalized on April 6 after suffering a “physical accident” at his home. During treatment, he experienced “medical complications due to diabetes and high blood pressure, which led to cardiopulmonary arrest.” He died at the age of 65.
Gov. Phil Murphy called a special primary on July 16 and a special general election on Sept. 18 to fill Payne’s seat for the remainder of his term. Twelve candidates (11 Democrats, one Republican) have filed to run in the special primary to succeed Payne.
Payne also must be replaced on the November ballot when he begins his term in January 2025. According to the New Jersey Globe, the Democratic county chairman in his district could call a convention to choose a candidate. They have until August 29 to name a replacement.
