Washington police on Wednesday said they had stepped up security measures following the New Year’s attacks in Las Vegas and New Orleans.
The Metropolitan Police Department posted on social media platform
The statement comes as the FBI is leading the investigation into the two attacks. In New Orleans, at least 15 people were killed and dozens injured when a man drove a pickup truck down Bourbon Street. In Las Vegas, a cybertruck exploded outside the Trump International Hotel, killing one person and injuring seven others.
The announcement of increased security also comes ahead of many major events scheduled to take place at the Capitol in January.
In the coming weeks, local authorities must prepare for former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral procession, the arrival of new House members for the 119th Congress, the certification of the election and President-elect Trump’s inauguration.
“As we approach major upcoming events in the District of Columbia, MPD will continue to work with local and federal partners to assess potential threats and make necessary adjustments to protect our communities,” D.C. police said.
The Las Vegas Cybertruck explosion is believed to be an isolated incident, but authorities say the man who drove a pickup truck into a crowd in New Orleans likely wasn’t working alone.
