An Oasis reunion may happen sooner than expected.
The band that ushered in the Britpop era ended a 15-year hiatus last week when they announced a tour of the British Isles next summer, with the 17 shows on Saturday selling out as Oasis fans fought for tickets.
But once feuding brothers and Oasis frontmen Liam and Noel Gallagher could be sharing the stage together much sooner than that if a Saudi boxing promoter gets his way.
Liam will perform his hit song at London’s Wembley Stadium ahead of the world heavyweight title fight between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois on September 21, which is expected to draw a crowd of more than 90,000.
Turki Alalcic, a Saudi adviser who organises boxing events in the kingdom, said on Monday he also hoped Noel would be at Wembley.
“If we get them together it will be something amazing,” the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority told British radio station talkSPORT. “We will try, we will try, why not?”
An Oasis spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
Oil-rich Saudi Arabia is a major player in the world of sports, attracting top footballers such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar to the kingdom, hosting a landmark golf series, offering big prize money and hosting a number of high-profile boxing matches.
Online ticket sites were struggling with demand for Oasis’ first show in 15 years, with prices starting at around £74 (about $100) and rising to a £506 ($666) package that included a pre-show party and merchandise. All tickets were sold out.
Some tickets for the Joshua-Dubois fight are still available.
