Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican, said in an interview Sunday that the documents recently released by Special Counsel Jack Smith were “the tantrums of a deranged fanatic.”
“Well, what I think about what Jack Smith did this week was the tantrum of a crazy fanatic who was angry that he kept wasting his time on the Supreme Court during his career. “Cotton spoke with Kristen Welker on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”
Smith’s filing in the election interference case against former President Trump, made public Wednesday, described the former president’s attempts to thwart the transfer of power as a “private criminal act.” A statement in which President Trump supposedly said, “So what?” was also revealed. January 6, 2021, in response to an aide notifying the former President that the Vice President had been transported to a safe location.
Trump spokesman Stephen Cheng previously called Smith’s filing “full of lies” and “unconstitutional.”
“Crazy Jack Smith and the Washington DC Radical Democrats are hell-bent on weaponizing the Justice Department to stay in power,” Cheng said. “President Trump is in control and radical Democrats throughout the Deep State are terrified. “This entire case is a partisan and unconstitutional witch hunt that should be completely dismissed, along with all the lies of the rest of the Democratic Party.”
On “Meet the Press,” Cotton called the files “unverified, uncross-examined hearsay from grand jury testimony, and for that reason they are not generally released.”
“He went to court,” Cotton said of Smith. “He filed a brief that was four times the size of a normal brief and requested special permission to make it public within 30 days of the election. “This is likely professional misconduct by Jack Smith and needs to be investigated.”
