Apple already offers its own Home app that lets users control and manage HomeKit devices, but there are several third-party apps that extend these features, one of which is Controller for HomeKit. This week the Controller for HomeKit gets a major update that adds a new “Floor Plan” feature for mapping your home in 3D.
Controller for HomeKit
Floor Plans allows Controller for HomeKit users to create a 3D model of their home using a LiDAR scanner on a compatible iPhone or iPad. Once the model is created, any HomeKit device can be mapped to this 3D model.
“This 3D model can be enriched with buttons for direct device control, displaying current sensor values, executing scenes and workflows, and navigating the space. This gives users a visual overview and intuitive control of Apple Home, such as turning lights on and off or checking the status of contact sensors,” the developers explain.
Interestingly, even if you don’t have an iPhone or iPad with a LiDAR scanner, you can still take advantage of this feature by using a friend’s device. All you have to do is scan the App Clip on a compatible device and then export the 3D model to your own device. The developers also note that all scanning is processed locally, so the 3D model of your home is not sent to a third-party server.
In addition to floor plans, Controller for HomeKit also provides features such as complex automation, notifications, setup code backup, workflows, and widgets.
You can download Controller for HomeKit for free from the App Store, and the Pro version is available through a paid subscription or lifetime license.
