Google is reportedly developing a new Android API called Rich Ongoing Notifications. This allows apps to display information at a glance in the status bar, similar to Apple’s real-time activity in Dynamic Island on the iPhone. This is according to a journalist who discovered the code in the Android 15 QPR1 beta 3 release: It can act similar to a time tracker that appears when you’re currently on a phone call. You’ll see some text in a bubble at the top of the display so you can get more details when you open the app.

This can be especially useful for things like public transit updates, allowing users to track relevant information like departure times or Uber’s estimated arrival time while using other apps. However, this feature is not yet complete, and it may still be a while before we see it. Rahman expects it to launch alongside Android 16.
