Following Richie’s appointment as Ulster boss earlier this year, Jack left the Leinster academy to follow his father to Belfast and made his first appearance on Friday, replacing the injured Stuart McCloskey.
In the Munster match, Jack kicked a corner instead of scoring, potentially giving Ulster a draw in the match, which they eventually lost 22-19.
Murphy added, “Jack, unfortunately I’m going to be harsher on him because he’s right here in front of me.”
“It’s difficult for both of us. It’s difficult to pick my 20-year-old son, but it’s difficult for him because he’s been training for the last few weeks. He’s done really well and not been selected.
“He’s here. I think James (Humphreys) has had a good cameo. Aiden (Morgan) has started every game we’ve had so far.”
“We’re in a situation where we have three teenagers, and we want to do the best we can out of those three.”
Ulster will be without injured center Stuart McCloskey for Saturday’s game, but Ireland trio Cormac Izuchukwu, Nick Timoney and Iain Henderson have all resumed team training ahead of Saturday’s match.
Ulster sit 11th in the URC table, one place below Connacht, with both sides having won just three of their eight games. The UIster let a 20-3 lead slip away in their final trip to Galway as Connacht won 22-20.
