Amid growing calls for Biden to drop out of the presidential race, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has endorsed President Biden.
Caucus Chair Nanette Barragan (D-CA) and Vice Chair Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) made a statement On Monday night, Biden and Vice President Harris confirmed their support for his reelection bid. Their statement came as Biden and his team attempted to calm the backlash they received for their poor debate with former President Trump last month.
“We stand with President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris,” the caucus leaders said in a statement. “Over the past year and a half, the Biden-Harris administration has worked with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ initiative to get CHC on the road. Through that initiative, we have worked to empower Latino communities across the country.”
According to a statement, the caucus hit the road last week with First Lady Jill Biden in Allentown, Pennsylvania, a city more than half of which is Latino. Caucus leaders also noted Biden’s commitment to “historic investment” in communities across the country, including Latinos.
They also pointed to immigration relief announced by Biden last month that would allow spouses of certain U.S. citizens to remain in the country if they meet certain requirements.
“We look forward to continued collaboration on the road and legislative victories that benefit the American people,” the lawmakers wrote.
The Congressional Hispanic Coalition’s endorsement follows a post-debate endorsement by members of the Congressional Black Coalition. Biden met with members of the Congressional Black Coalition on Monday night, and the campaign said they would “discuss the stakes of the 2024 election and our shared commitment to defeating Donald Trump in November.”
