Kansas City Comets Press Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The I-70 Series Cup remains in limbo after the Kansas City Comets (3-0-2) failed to beat the Ambush (2-3-0). The Comets suffered overtime heartbreak for the second time this month as they lost 5-4 to the St. Louis Ambush on Saturday evening at Cable Dahmer Arena.
The Comets were in control for most of the game, but Ambush converted 5 of 14 shots into goals and the Comets had 4 goals on 36 shots. Lucas Almeida’s overtime goal handed the Comets their first home loss this season in front of 4,631.
Ambush scored the first two goals. The first was a pass to himself off the boards before William Eskay improvised a pass while in double-team coverage. Franck Tayou made it 2-0 just before halftime. Goalkeeper to beat.
The comet returned in the third period. Christian Anderaos got the Comets on the board with a powerful shot before Rian Marques scored a pair to put the Comets up 3-2 late in the third quarter. The Ambush responded quickly as Wil Nyamsi pulled the visitors back at the last minute.
St. Louis went back up 4-3 on a shot by John SK, but Ramon Palmer rescued the Comets in the final 90 seconds of regulation to force overtime. With 3 minutes and 35 seconds left in overtime, Lucas Almeida attempted a shot that landed near the goal, scoring the winning goal.
The Comets scored a point in the game, but left Silverstein Eye Centers Field disappointed as they blew their chance to win the I-70 Series Cup. Paulo Nascimento made 19 saves and achieved a comeback victory.
Palmer’s fourth quarter score was his 100th for the Comets. He joins the Century Goals Club, which includes Leo Gibson, Vahid Assadpour, Lucas Rodriguez, John Sosa, Byron Alvarez and Bryan Perez.
The Comets will have one more bite at the apple on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to St. Louis for a New Year’s Eve rematch with the Ambush. KC will return home on Sunday, January 5th for another rivalry against the Milwaukee Wave. Tickets for next weekend’s contest are available now at kccomets.com/tickets.
