Presenter and comedian Joe Lycett will host the inaugural Sky Arts Awards this month, which will take place at The Roundhouse on Tuesday 17 September and air on Sky Arts and Freeview at 9pm.
In early September, a series of ‘Stop the Art’ protests took place at cultural attractions across the UK, including Shakespeare’s Globe. The stunt caused confusion among the public, declaring that ‘art is finished’ and that it was a waste of time.
In fact, Joe Lisset and his team were the ones who staged the protests to raise awareness of the state of the British arts industry amid funding cuts and rising unemployment.
On September 5th, Joe Lycett launched a manifesto for the arts on social media. The manifesto is full of cost-neutral proposals that the UK government can take immediate action to improve the conditions for people working in the arts and culture sector, even in difficult economic times. Joe’s manifesto will be presented to the nation at the Sky Arts Awards on Tuesday, September 17th.
“Over the past few weeks I have met with arts organisations, venues and artists to produce a manifesto for the arts that sets out clear and actionable things the government can do right now to improve the conditions for everyone working in the UK’s cultural industries,” said Joe Lycett.
The Sky Arts Awards nominees were all chosen by a panel of more than 50 judges from across the arts and media industries, including Michael Sheen, Oti Mabuse, Josh Widdicombe and David Morrissey.
The awards show will feature 14 categories including the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Times Innovation Award, as well as the recent Heroes of the Arts Award, which recognizes five individuals who have made a significant contribution to the national arts community.
