It’s time to give Chelsea icon Cole Palmer some more flowers, as if his garden is already full of them.
I remember sitting in a bar at Stamford Bridge a little over a year ago with a bunch of lads like Luke Rushbrook, Rob Pratley and of course Charlie, you may remember from this site, and then the news came out that Chelsea were signing Cole Palmer from Manchester City. Luke and I were excited about that.
Then I saw a lot of negative reactions online from some Chelsea fans criticizing the signing. I thought it was very strange. I thought it was a fantastic signing and I rated Palmer very highly at the time.
But even then, I couldn’t have imagined the impact he had last season. Chelsea wouldn’t have finished as high as they did last season without Cole Palmer. Literally, without Palmer’s goals and assists, we wouldn’t have been anywhere. He was Chelsea’s talisman. He led the team on many occasions, like Eden Hazard in his prime.

This is absolutely crazy! I can’t believe it.
His trajectory has been crazy. A year later, he was representing England at the Euros (despite having to start every game), and now he’s been nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, which we all know is a huge achievement in itself.
Palmer only turned 22 in May, but he’s already on his way to becoming one of the world’s elite athletes.
Even if he has a few bad performances, he has no fear at all because he has an elite mentality and he supports himself completely. His confidence is so high and you can’t see it dropping. His mentality is exactly what we need from our players. The way he always steps up confidently in pressure situations and converts penalties is amazing.
I watched Palmer play last year with pure wonder and often shock. I had a high opinion of him at this time last year, but even I was shocked by how well he did. I didn’t expect it. At least I didn’t think he would be as influential and impactful as he was so quickly.
He has grown so much in such a short space of time. It is unprecedented. We are lucky to have Palmer at Chelsea and even more fortunate to have him share the goals and assists burden this season with the quality of attack we have put together (aside from the genuine and productive nine goals). Palmer had to carry so much weight (not literally) on his shoulders last season that it is no surprise that his muscles are a little tired now. At least he can share the weight this season.
I have run out of things to say about Palmer, and he certainly cost me a lot of money by buying me a lot of flowers from the store! But I hope his rise to the top continues, and I am so happy to see him receiving the Ballon d’Or worldwide recognition and people all over the world following his celebration. It is a testament to the impact he has had on football alone.
It’s going to be bumpy, there’s no miracle worker. He can’t be 9/10 every game. We have to expect that and not expect too much from a 22-year-old. But with his confidence and natural ability, I have no doubt I’ll be writing this article again next year to say that his trajectory has grown even further!
